We often use inspirational quotes to get us psyched up for exercise or weight loss, but what if we applied those same quotes as motivation to declutter our homes? Here are a few of may favorite quotes to help us all get motivated to declutter our homes and our lives.
At one point in my life, I signed up to be a Health Coach. It was a moment of weakness!
As part of my Health Coaching duties, I spent hours looking for inspirational quotes to help motivate my “clients” and to help draw in new “clients.”
The truth is our efforts to lose weight and get healthy run parallel course to decluttering our houses. Both require us to take action to let go of something that hinders us from meeting our goals.
It hit me, as I pinned a few inspirational quotes to Pinterest (You should totally follow me on Pinterest!), that many of these same quotes and sayings pertain to our desire to declutter our homes. Of course, I want to share some of my favorites here!
Motivated to Declutter Inspiration Quote #1
I’ll be the first to admit that in general, I am a very undisciplined person! I know that may be shocking because of my profession, but it shouldn’t. If I don’t want to do something, I simply don’t do it until its completion is critical! One of the reasons I have struggled my whole life with my weight is because I don’t love drinking water and I want food to be convenient! Chopping vegetables and weighing protein every.single.day is not enjoyable to me. You know what, though, by doing those things I have achieved some weight loss success.
The same is true when it comes to our homes and attacking our clutter problems. It’s not fun. It’s exhausting. It’s tedious. Often, we don’t see immediate results. Yet, if our goal is to live in homes that are uncluttered and have some semblance of organization, we have to put in the work – even when we don’t want to.
It would be easier to fix ourselves a cup of coffee and read a book, but that isn’t going to make a dent in our clutter problem. We have to choose to complete the tasks that address and will eliminate our clutter and disorganization even when we don’t want to – even when it’s hard – even when we don’t see immediate results! As Nike once used as their tagline – Just Do It!
Motivated to Declutter Inspiration Quote #2
Our homes didn’t get cluttered all in one day. More than likely, our clutter is the result of days, weeks, months, and possibly years of neglect. So here’s the newsflash – they aren’t going declutter themselves in a day, either! The process is going to be extensive and could take weeks or months to achieve a good, livable, organized state. I’ve heard it said that it takes 3 passes through a room to get it fully decluttered!
The decluttering process requires a change in our habits, a change in our routines. Just like weight loss, we have to build new habits into our days. Drinking 64 oz of water a day equals setting a time for 10-minute increments and flexing our decision-making muscles as we work through a pile of papers – daily! Chopping those vegetables could be the same as refraining from bringing any new items into our homes for a set period of time.
What change in our daily routines would benefit us positively when it comes to dealing with the clutter in our homes?
Motivated to Declutter Inspiration Quote #3
Here’s where the rubber meets the road! Are we ready to face this cold hard truth? You want the truth? Can you handle the truth? (Cue Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson)
Apart from a drastic change in our habits, our homes will stay just as they are – or worse! It’s the same as me continuing to eat a #1 with a sweet tea from Chick-Fil-A every day and expecting my pants to get looser! It’s not possible!
Until we shift our shopping habits, our time-wasting habits, or our desire to live in uncluttered homes, the clutter will never go away. Decluttering requires action. Decluttering requires change!
We need to change the way we flippantly leave things sitting out that could easily be put away. We need to make better decisions about our purchases and decipher better between our wants and needs before we swipe our credit cards or hit check out on our phone screens! We need to change our way of thinking about what truly provides us with fulfillment and satisfaction.
Motived to Declutter Inspiration Quote #4
Many of us don’t have the time or space to empty all of our belongings onto the floor of our living rooms and sort through them one by one. We have to continue to live in our homes while we’re in the decluttering process. We don’t even have to hire a professional organizer or send our kids to spend a week at grandma’s so we can accomplish a good declutter. Don’t get me wrong those are both great ideas (wink, wink)!
What I’m really saying is that decluttering can happen when we are just consistent in taking action. I recommend making appointments on the calendar specifically for decluttering or organizing. Block off a couple of hours a week and dedicate that time to decluttering just as we would any other appointment in our lives.
We also don’t have to get rid of everything we own and start from scratch! Our clutter tolerance levels are different, person to person! What I consider clutter, someone else may not! I recommend my clients start with some small gains – a drawer, a cabinet, etc. – before moving onto major purging!
Consistent action will produce results, just as consistent healthy eating, water drinking, and exercise produce results on the scale and on our bodies.
Motivated to Declutter Inspiration Quote #5
Dealing with our clutter requires a level of bravery we wouldn’t expect. Letting go of our belongings involves decisions about the value of sentimental items, items that were gifted to us, or items for which we paid good money! While we typically don’t think of these decisions as necessitating bravery, they do! We have to be brave in our honesty and brave in letting those items leave our homes.
Each time we show up to one of our scheduled decluttering sessions, we exercise our grit and determination. Each time our resolve grows little by little. This is why it’s so important to keep showing up – to be consistent – to continue changing our habits – to build decluttering into a discipline in our lives.
The process may not get easier, but we get more laser-focused on our desired end result – an uncluttered home and life!

I find decluttering is an ongoing activity. At the moment, I’m cleaning up the backyard garden and weeding which seems to depend on the weather.
