Last week, we performed the fun task of cleaning up our Game Day Porch to get it ready for all the new elements that are coming…slowly, but surely!
Since I’ve not been home a full weekend in over a month, my progress has been stunted to some degree. In all honesty, I’m procrastinating on the hardest parts of this whole project. At least they’re the hardest parts as conjured up in my head. Anyone else suffer from procrastinating the hard things?
This week I’ve added some of the prettier elements and a practical one, as well!
One of my goals for this space is to add in greenery and plants because our backyard is so barren and sandy and quite an eyesore. Adding in beautiful greenery and plants may provide a little bit of a distraction from the sand that’s not adjacent to a beautiful ocean!
Initially, I moved a few plants from my front porch to the back porch. As much as I liked them there, they weren’t quite what I initially had in my mind. On our trip to Home Depot to buy lumber for our furniture build, I ended up purchasing a few extra plants for the back porch.
I have a really good friend who has the most beautiful backyard and porch, full of potted plants and flowers. It’s so peaceful and calming to me. She spends a ton of time watering and caring for them all. Her hard work definitely pays off.
Now that I have these 3 planters in place and full of these pops of green, I’m thinking I’ll add at least one more flowering pot to the arrangement. Once I have all the furniture in place, I’ll have to reassess and see if there are other places a plant could a little something-something!
I’m already thinking about adding a wall planter or two. Maybe I have a plant addiction! Ha!
Another element that arrived this week is my bar cart! Ordering this particular cart was a bit of a compromise, but it will work out just fine. I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that I’m a little bit of a tightwad! I’ve tried to balance out my spending on this project to stay within my budget. Buying a less expensive bar cart allows me a little extra cash to invest in a few extra decorative elements.
My thought is that most of the summer, I’ll keep a pitcher of water here for the neighborhood kids to get a drink. I also want a place to hold our s’mores supplies that isn’t the coffee table out here. And if we ever have real friends over, we can store cold beverages and snacks on the bar cart!
This one is definitely the industrial style I want. It’s just missing a middle shelf that may have been helpful for serving, but it would also be one more service area to clean. Always keeping it practical and realistic, here!
Finally, I took the plunge and bought one of these Dynatrap bug repellent devices. A friend recommended this and I was able to get one locally at Bed, Bath and Beyond. With this device, a few citronella candles, a citronella plant and a lemongrass plant, maybe we can avoid as many bug bites as possible this summer!
My shopping list of last minute, final details for the Game Day Porch is growing exponentially! So many little details still to deal with and the clock is definitely ticking down – quickly!
Check back next week as I report back on our furniture build! There’s already been a little hiccup in the plan and I’ve been forced to pivot a little bit. I hope that my pivot works. I guess we’ll find out in the next couple of days!

Love the new pots and bar cart! But, what has me on the edge of my seat is your new bug repellent device! I hope you keep us up to date on how it works … the bugs are out here too. Looking forward too seeing your ORC come together! xo
