This time of year – you know, the beginning of a new year – we often think about ways we want to improve our personal and business lives. Unfortunately, lots of us don’t always make goals for what we want to accomplish within the 4 walls of our homes. Maybe it’s just not a priority in your house or maybe you don’t have any projects you’re intent on completing or maybe you just fly by the seat of your pants and when a project presents itself, you complete it. Regardless, I like to have some sort of direction for areas of focus in my home.
We are living in a rental house for the next 18 months so my ability to do permanent-type projects is greatly diminished. No feature walls or major painting can be done. Boo! I do have a few temporary projects up my sleeves, though! At least in my mind. Not sure they’ve made it to my sleeves because that’s awfully close to my hands, which would mean I’m close to getting them done.
Goal #1 – Finish What I’ve Started
I have a few projects that I have either purchased the supplies to complete or have even made a little progress on in the past 6 months. One is some raffia sunbursts for my girls’ rooms. This will be a simple project to finish. It’s just a matter of cutting raffia and tying it around embroidery hoops.
Another is window treatments for two square windows in our bonus room. I already have the fabric cut and pinned together. Just need to sew straight lines on the 4 sides of the two curtain pieces. There are a few other little technical things to hanging them, but it’s the sewing part that is holding me up. (Perfectionism isn’t my friend when it comes to sewing projects!)
Finally, I want to paint some canvases for the bonus room. This is something totally new for me that I want to try. I bought the paint to try out on some smaller canvases first, but I’ve since let my little Picassos paint my test canvases!
Goal #2 – Faux Shiplap Wall Above My Fireplace
Every wall in this rental house is beige, and not a pretty beige – not a greige – a dull, dirty-looking beige. I guess it’s a good neutral color, but it’s definitely not my favorite. I want to create some sort of large shiplap-y piece to go above the mantle to break up the monotony of the sea of beige.
Goal #3 – Make Myself Some Large Signs
Now, listen, I mentioned perfectionism not being my friend with sewing, but perfectionism, coupled with lots of overthinking, has paralyzed me for years from making my own signs. I have all the tools to put the wood piece together – saw, glue, clamps, nails, hammer. I also have all the tools to make stencils for signs – Silhouette Cameo and vinyl. What I lack is the confidence (and patience) to screw up a few times trying to get it right!
There’s an obvious common theme running through these, goals, isn’t there?
Goal #4 – Large Wood Art Piece for Blonde Boy’s Room
Since I can’t do a feature wall here, I have a vision for creating a large wood art piece for Blonde Boy’s room. Not that he’ll appreciate it at all! Again, I have the tools! It’s the overthinking part that keeps me from moving forward.
Goal #5 – Establish a Cleaning Groove
I know it may shock you since my occupation consists of helping people organize their homes, but I DESPISE cleaning! Hate it! I do lots of panic cleaning when company is coming. I like to have at least one bathroom that they can use that won’t gross them out! Don’t get me wrong. We aren’t slobs. The house is fairly tidy most of the time, but you probably shouldn’t eat off the floor (even though we do) and you may be tempted to wipe that toothpaste out of the sink if you come over unannounced! Fair warning! So this year, I’m working on incorporating cleaning tasks into my daily calendar so they don’t get burned to a crisp on the back burners of my mind!
There you have it – 5 goals for my home for 2021. I guarantee I’ll throw in other little projects along the way (I already have one in the works), but remember I’m in a rental and won’t doing anything major. By the fall, I’ll be focused on getting ready for another move. Making this house more homey will be on the bottom of my priorities!
So tell me, what are some goals you have for your home? Decorating a space? Creating decor pieces? Crafting something special? I want to know! I’ll try to keep you updated on my own progress!

I’ve never even thought of having goals for my house, until recently. We are heading into our fourth year here in Moore (which is a total violation of the spouse agreement I made when we came here, but here we are….) I have always referred to this house as the rental that we own. Don’t get me wrong – its been a great house for this season – it’s just in the wrong location. So my word for 2021 is PURGE. We have a LOT of stuff in boxes that has not seen the light of day since 2017 (or even earlier). As we are striving to build our “forever” house on our farm this year, my goal is to only take things with me that we use or we love. Or that our daughter has trusted us to keep, like her cat. I think having some specific goals for the house would help me break this into bites I can chew, and hopefully chase away some of that same perfectionism that often paralyzes me. Thanks for the inspiration, Jen!

First, I want to replace a few “make do” furniture pieces that worked in other houses, but not this one (or they’re too beat up from years of kid abuse and Army moves to keep for much longer). Second, and this is a continuation of last year, is to get the linen situation (sheets, towels, etc.) to the point of not being embarrassing. Lastly, I need to work on the overwhelming task of scrapbooking all of the boxes of “treasures” I’ve been hauling from house to house since probably college. It’s all organized, but needs to be photographed and put into digital books for printing when a good sale occurs. The way I look at it, even if scrapbooks take up the same amount of space, which they should not, they will be more organized and able to be enjoyed by the family.
