Create a cozy and stylish master bedroom with this mood board as inspiration.
Our master bedroom has been the most neglected room in our house, well houses, for the past 10 years or so.
Between creating baby and kid rooms, moving from house to house, and knowing most were temporary, our master bedroom was in a constant state of make-do!
Finally, I’m over this queen size bed. I’m over this matchy-matchy black furniture. It’s past time to show this room some love.
In my true fashion, I’m in a state of overthinking and need to be a little more motivated to get this project underway. We have a guest staying with us in a week or so and need to move our current bed to the guest room.
As I put this mood board together, I realized that this is the exact color scheme I used in my office at the yellow house. I’m even considering the exact same paint color.
Master Bedroom Design Blank Slate
Here’s where this room began – a big, spacious blank slate. This was the state of this room when we moved into this house in October 2022.
This wall of windows provides lots of light, but that’s problematic when it’s time to sleep! Light-blocking curtains are a must!
There should be just enough space between the other two windows to fit a king-size bed. Don’t worry, I’ve measured and measured again!
Master Bedroom Current State
We have had this black bedroom suite for about 14 years.
When we purchased this set, we downsized from a California king to a queen, aware that we would be moving every few years with no guarantee we’d always have a master bedroom big enough for a California king.
Honestly, we didn’t measure very well back then so this black furniture overwhelmed the bedroom we put it in.
The classic sleigh bed drew us to this bed, but now that we’ve lived with the pain of making this bed with so little space at the foot of the bed to situate blankets and sheets – we’re ready to move to a footboard-less bed!
Stylish Master Bedroom Design
We’ll be implementing this design in phases.
The first phase clearly is upgrading to a king-size bed! Will be adding bed to cart shortly!
We already own this rug, which was purchased for our dining area, but was much too large for the space. Instead of returning it, we decided to use it to soften up the hardwood floors in our bedroom.
I wish we had video of my sons, husband and I attempting to get this rug under this very heavy bed! Not for the faint at heart, mildly OCD, tape measure-using perfectionist!
Down the road, we’ll be adding a board and batten detail around the whole room in either SW Peppercorn or SW Grizzle Gray or Magnolia Home Coffee Nook! With so much light from the windows, I’m confident this room can handle the dark moody accent walls.
And I’m swooning over these blush pink velvety curtains! When I fell in love with these, I realized I was going back to my old home office roots! You can see how well that one turned out HERE!
I’m super excited to get started. Since we’re in the height of track season, this will be a very, very slow and gradual process.
In the meantime, I’m just gonna have to learn to be content with other places in the house being a disaster!
Hang in there with me as we attempt to make this bedroom transformation happen under budget and before the year ends! Come back next Wednesday for a progress check!
Curious about the final result of this project? Hop over to see it HERE!
