A summer trip to the beach inspired my girls to create a coastal themed bedroom for themselves. Keep reading to see how I redesigned this bedroom for girls.
For several years, my girls have shared a bedroom. Over the course of those years, the decor in their room has changed several times.
I loved their first room, which I decorated all on my own. I didn’t allow any input from them. Purchased their headboards, comforters, and wall decor without consulting them. I mean why would I let them have any say in the matter!
A year or so later, my oldest daughter got a wild hair and decided that her birthday gift would be redecorating their bedroom. She insisted on bunk beds and I insisted on a budget. The compromise for both of our desires was the purchase of silver metal bunk beds from IKEA.
These served them just fine, but making up a bunk bed is a pain. They also covered the unsightly silver metal frame of the beds with various stickers. Why do children love to put stickers on everything?
Coastal Themed Bedroom Inspiration
When we moved to the new house, I absolutely hated those bunk beds more than I had in their previous bedroom. Such an eyesore!
While we were on vacation at Hilton Head Island last summer, they were inspired to create their very own coastal beach retreat in their bedroom. I went along with the idea but insisted it could not and would not be tacky beach stuff.
I already had this pink comforter that a client had given me and knew it had to be incorporated somehow. Thankfully, it became the perfect color to build all the other elements of the room off of.
Over time, we started collecting other accessories to pull the look together. I tried to let the girls have some say in those accessories – within reason! A few weeks ago, I shared how I made the Raffia Wreaths for their room.
We all love how it turned out. Let’s be real, though, they don’t keep it this clean much. I had to do a good straightening to capture these pictures a few weeks ago.
We need to do a pretty good purge of toys and clothes, but that’s an ongoing issue with kids of all ages.
As with any project, there are snafus! Our nearest IKEA is about 2 hours away so I planned a day trip to meet a friend. We picked out the bed and the nightstands. Well, I had pretty much decided that’s what I was going to buy before we got there.
A couple of weeks later, when my husband put the bed together, we discovered that I had bought the wrong size slats to keep the mattress in place. So we had to do a little engineering of our own, which required buying some boards at our local hardware store. We cut them to fit and they have worked out perfectly. A trip to Atlanta for bed slats was just not worth it!
Because the only wall in this room for a bookshelf is on the wall in front of the door, I wanted something that was open-ended. I didn’t want to walk into the room and immediately see the bulky side of a bookshelf. This plant rack, that’s what it’s supposed to be used for, works perfectly. It also fit within my budget!
I love having a chair in a bedroom. It’s not only perfect for throwing dirty clothes on but also good for sitting and reading a book or putting shoes on. We bought this slipper chair in their room from a neighbor who was getting rid of it. Perfect color at the perfect time!
My oldest daughter has played a variety of sports in her 12 years of life. She’s been a swimmer. She’s run a few 5Ks. Lately, she’s played lots of soccer! I wanted to provide a place to display some of their medals and pictures that was somewhat inconspicuous. I love how this vignette turned out. I’m sure we’ll be adding pictures, medals, and certificates to this wall for years to come.
All the other bedrooms in our house are in shambles compared to this one. We need to do some more makeovers, but I’ve got two other projects that are more pressing that I can’t wait to share with you!

So pretty! It can be an emotional time when our kids begin to want to express themselves in their room decor but fun too!

Thanks! Yes. It’s hard for me to let them have an opinion on decor, but both of my girls are creative and are starting to fall in love with home decor.

You might not remember the book shelf/toy shelf in your brother’s room when we lived in Bellmead, but it was a plant shelf. I loved that it was so open looking with all the wood strips. And when I let him help with the decor, he chose a couch instead of a bed to sleep on. LOL At least I got to pick the curtains.
