For years I dreamed of having a space that was strategically set up as a conversation area. Cue this farmhouse sitting room!
In our house hunting adventures, back in 2017, before we ever were seriously going to buy one, we fell in love with floor plans that offered a hearth room, keeping room, or sitting room.. We loved the idea of having a space where people could sit and talk in a comfortable chair and just relax, but still be able to easily grab a drink or a snack. Food is very important in our lives! Most of the houses with a keeping room in this area were way out of our price range when it really came time to buy a house for real.
When we walked through this particular house, now known as the yellow house, I envisioned our downstairs living room, or sitting room, as the room that would function as our hearth room. I immediately started scouring all my typical furniture shopping websites for chairs or small couches. In an attempt to stay on budget and knowing that I didn’t want to buy something I would have to deal with shipping back, I honed in on Target.com!
I found these chairs and liked their price, so I bought 4 of them. Initially, I thought they might be too big. I bought them and had them delivered before we even had keys to this house! After a little get together we had one night when a friend came and curled up right beside me, I knew they were perfect. If two grown women could fit our butts in one of them comfortably, they are the right size for chit chatting or curling up with a good book or the remote control!
The goal is for the kids to spend as little time in this room as possible, however, it’s not been uncommon for Mickey or Sophia or Elena or some other singing cartoon character to spend time on the screen down here just to save my sanity! There are still walls left empty because I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to put on them. Lots of ideas swirling around my brain for them, but some of those ideas won’t be even attempted until the kids are back in school – in less than a month! What?!

I would definitely say this is my very favorite room in our house for now. I hope it greets our friends and family like a warm hug and invites them to sit down and relax while they’re here.
Farmhouse Sitting Room Decor Update
It should be said that over the years, this room had a few tweaks.
The rug was changed out from its initial rug to the one shown in these pictures. The mantle changed quite frequently as the seasons changed. And the decor on the wicker table changed as I treated myself to fresh flowers on occasion.
Even though we’ve not lived in this house since 2020, this will always be one of my very favorite rooms I ever designed and decorated. These chairs didn’t quite fit our needs when we moved from the yellow house to a rental house in Auburn, AL so they were sold on Facebook Marketplace. I hope their new owners have enjoyed them as much as we did!
